Gas in Luxembourg has become more expensive by almost 40% in half a year
Compared to the first half of 2021, in the first half of 2022, gas prices in the Grand Duchy rose by 37%. This is slightly above the average European level of 35% and the performance of neighboring France (23%) and Germany (35%). However, it is much lower than in Belgium — 100% growth.
At the same time, electricity prices in Luxembourg rose by only 2% compared to last year. Germany experienced 3% growth, France — 7%. Belgium is out of luck again with a 25% price increase. Average European growth is at ~13%.
These statistics were published on October 31 by Eurostat. The main reason why gas is getting more expensive is the war in Ukraine and the accompanying energy crisis. Eurostat assumes that the rise in prices would be more significant if it were not for state subsidies, a reduction in the tax burden and various levies.
Nevertheless even with these measures the European economy is in a zone of serious turbulence — inflation in the region recently broke a new record.
