A new wave of fraud in Luxembourg: fake articles and artificial intelligence
In Luxembourg, online fraud is on the rise, with attackers using increasingly sophisticated methods. This time, the spotlight has been on ads created with the help of artificial intelligence that mislead users. The criminals spread false publications on social networks such as Facebook, using fake articles on behalf of popular local media outlets such as Luxemburger Wort.
These "articles" promise quick and easy ways to make money by forcing users to click on suspicious links and send money to scammers. In particular, one such publication claims that RTL journalist Mariette Cenners allegedly supports the scheme by offering it to everyone. Naturally, this is not true, but many people may fall for it, trusting familiar names.
The problem is not limited to fake articles. Social media is flooded with fake posts, including fictitious interviews of celebrities such as Jean-Claude Juncker, the former president of the European Commission. These posts target users who trust public figures and encourage them to interact with fraudulent material.
Local authorities and initiatives such as the BeeSecure platform advise citizens to be as cautious as possible. If suspicious postings are detected, they should be reported immediately to the police or via the BeeSecure platform. The latter also provides detailed instructions on how to proceed if you become a victim of online fraud.
