Luxembourg to fight drunk driving
In response to Parliamentary Inquiry No. 1540, Ministers Yuriko Backes and Lex Delles reported that Luxembourg is reviewing its approach to preventing alcohol-related road accidents. This is because driving under the influence of alcohol remains one of the main causes of serious and fatal road accidents.
The issue raised by MPs was the introduction of breathalysers in catering establishments, following the example of Wallonia. However, the government has no plans to install such devices. Ministers explained that only certified devices used by the police can accurately measure alcohol levels. In addition, previous campaigns to hand out the tests have not shown much effect.
A key step will be the revision of penalties for driving under the influence of alcohol. The new National Road Safety Plan, approved on 29 November 2024, will propose stricter penalties. Details of the plan will be unveiled in January 2025, underlining the seriousness of the government's intentions in this area.
