Residents of Esch and Luxembourg feel safe and secure
Luxembourg Minister of the Interior Leon Gloden, together with the mayors of Luxembourg and Esch-sur-Alzette, presented the results of the "Local Police" project, launched on 1 July 2024. The project aims to strengthen security and citizens' trust in the police by bringing the work of law enforcement closer to the people.
Key Project Outcomes:
- 1,650 additional operations were conducted, as well as 3,400 preventive checks and 2,600 traffic checks.
- Police focused on key locations with high footfall and high crime rates, including the Ville Haute, Gare and Bonnevoie neighbourhoods in Luxembourg.
- Co-operation with local authorities has become regular: a format of weekly consultations with mayors and a unified reporting system have been introduced.
Minister Leon Gloden emphasised the importance of the "4Ps" strategy: more personnel, more presence, more proximity, more prevention. This approach has already strengthened the sense of security among residents and has shown its effectiveness, which was the reason for extending the project and preparing its legislative enshrinement.
According to Pascal Peters, director general of police, three factors need to be considered to extend the model to other cities:
- High attendance at certain locations,
- The presence of visible manifestations of crime,
- Problems with local public order.
An increase in staffing will also be required. To this end, police recruitment will continue in 2025. Up to 200 new officers per year are expected to be recruited.
