LuxTrust token served for many years as a key element for secure entry to online banking and public services in Luxembourg. However, as of the beginning of 2025, its use has been discontinued. The reason lies not only in the obsolescence of the device, but also in the growing threat of digital fraud. Modern technology has enabled cybercriminals to find vulnerabilities even in such specialised devices.

Tokens have been replaced by the LuxTrust Mobile app, which supports biometric authentication and detailed transaction verification. This means that access to your data is now protected not only by a password, but also by additional layers of protection, such as fingerprint or facial recognition. For those who prefer hardware solutions, LuxTrust Scan is available.

LuxTrust reminds you: never dispose of tokens in regular rubbish. They contain an embedded battery that can contaminate soil and water with toxic substances if disposed of improperly. Chemical elements from batteries can take decades to decompose, causing damage to ecosystems and human health.

To minimise its ecological footprint, the company has introduced a token recycling programme. Special recycling bins have been installed throughout Luxembourg:

  • at branches of ING and Raiffeisen,
  • in some supermarkets,
  • at recycling points such as Superdrecksköscht,
  • at LuxTrust headquarters.

A full list of collection points is available on the company's website. In addition, old tokens can be handed in at regular municipal recycling centres.

After collection, the devices are sent to a sorting station. There, specialists dismantle them into their components, including batteries and plastic components. All materials are sorted by type and sent to specialised processing centres. This makes it possible to safely dispose of hazardous elements and return useful materials such as metals back into the production chain.

The programme to switch to more modern authentication methods is not only about convenience, but also about enhancing cyber security. Staying with old technologies means exposing yourself to the risk of digital attacks. LuxTrust Mobile provides the ability to track every transaction and confirm it with biometrics.

The current situation shows that technological change is not just dictating new standards - it is helping to make digital interactions more secure and environmentally friendly. The issue of recycling old devices has become part of this evolution, emphasising the importance of responsible waste management even in the technology sector.
