A new mini-golf course has opened in Luxembourg

A new mini-golf course in the Pétrusse Valley in Luxembourg City welcomed its first visitors on Tuesday after a delay of more than a year. The original opening was scheduled for April 2025 to coincide with the LUGA garden show, but plans were derailed by the discovery of small rocks falling from a cliff located directly behind the playing area. This safety hazard forced the authorities to postpone the project’s launch by fifteen months.

At present, only half of the eighteen holes originally planned are in use, as the rest have been deemed to be situated too close to a potentially hazardous rock face. To compensate for the closed-off areas, the organisers have installed nine permanent courses and three mobile ones, bringing the total number of operational courses to twelve. As a temporary safety measure, a special fence costing around 80,000 euros has been erected between the mini-golf course and the rock face.

During the opening ceremony, the Mayor of Luxembourg, Lydie Polfer, emphasised the temporary nature of the measures taken and expressed her hope that the entire complex would resume full operations once protective netting had been installed on the cliffs. However, the search for a long-term solution is complicated by the fact that this site is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to Lydie Polfer, the protective structures must not detract from the historic character of the site, and once they have been installed, the stability of the rock face will need to be monitored continuously.

Shaaf Milani-Nia, the UNESCO site manager, explained that it is impossible to provide a 100 per cent guarantee that there will be no rockfalls in the future. He emphasised that the rock is a living natural structure with its own flora and fauna, which makes its physical behaviour unpredictable. For his part, Christian Blei, manager of the mini-golf course, was understanding of the difficulties that had arisen, stating that visitor safety was the top priority. He also added that over the past year the project team had made significant progress and would continue to work on improving the infrastructure, including the modernisation of the open-air terraces.

The new sports and leisure complex is now open to the public and operates daily. On weekdays, the pitch is open from 10.00 to 20.00, whilst at weekends opening hours are extended from 10.00 to 22.00.
