On 1 July 2025, the Minister of Sport, Georges Mischo, signed the Meng Gemeng lieft Sport charter with the inter-municipal syndicate Nordstad, which includes the communes of Diekirch, Erpeldange-sur-Sûre, Ettelbruck and Schieren. This brings the number of municipalities participating in the national strategy to 24.

The aim of the strategy, launched at the beginning of 2024, is to make physical activity part of the daily life of everyone in Luxembourg, regardless of age or place of residence. The project is based on three interrelated areas:

  • Actions: creating a co-operative network between sports clubs, co-ordinating efforts at local level.
  • Proposal: developing new and adapting existing sports programmes, ensuring equal access.
  • Infrastructure: strategic development of venues for sporting activities.

Of the 24 communes participating in the programme: 15 have hired sports coordinators on a permanent basis; 9 have opted for a joint model (through inter-municipal structures or co-operations).

At the moment, 11 coordinators are already in place and the rest are being selected or are in the process of being recruited. These professionals not only organise events, but also link local clubs, schools and health facilities, helping to integrate sport into all areas of life.

The Ministry of Sport and the National Institute of Physical Activity and Sport (INAPS) provide:

  • Funding for focal point positions;
  • personalised project support;
  • education and training;
  • a structured platform for exchange of experiences between coordinators, mayors and national structures.

According to Minister Mischo, the strategy is already bearing fruit, increasing the number of coordinators and strengthening sport as part of municipal everyday life. Negotiations are underway with new municipalities to join the programme.
