The EU continues to hold one of the world's leading positions in terms of the share of renewable energy in the total energy mix. According to Eurostat, in 2022 this share will be 18.9%, which is noticeably higher than the global average of 13.9% (based on 2021 data). This result looks particularly convincing against the background of such giants as China, the USA or India, where the shares of "green" energy remain significantly lower.

But even against the backdrop of European leadership, the figures remain quite contrasting when viewed globally. Among the 14 countries that each provide at least 1% of the world's energy supply, only one - Brazil - showed a truly high share: 46.1% of its energy comes from renewable sources. This is primarily a credit to the active use of biofuels and hydropower.

At the other end of the scale is Saudi Arabia, where renewables account for just 0.1% of the energy mix. This figure illustrates the country's almost total dependence on fossil fuels, despite repeated claims of a "green turn" and investments in solar power.

According to the Eurostat definition, renewable sources are not only solar, wind, hydro and geothermal energy, but also bioenergy and even part of municipal waste if it is suitable for incineration and subsequent energy recovery.

The publication is part of the "Key figures on the EU in the world" series, where Eurostat compares the EU's position with the other major players. This data is not only a reason for pride, but also an incentive for further development: the EU aims not only to maintain its leadership, but also to push the rest of the world to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy.
