A crisis is looming on the Luxembourg border

A petition calling for the urgent modernisation of the overloaded Metz railway line — Thionville — Luxembourg (Metz–Thionville–Luxembourg) has surpassed the required threshold of 5,500 signatures to trigger an official public debate. With three days to go before the deadline, the initiative had already gathered around 5,770 signatures. The authors of the petition are insisting on immediate improvements to passenger transport conditions on this route. At present, trains regularly run overcrowded, and passengers are routinely faced with delays and cancellations.
In this regard, the petitioners are calling for a swift increase in seating capacity and closer cooperation between the railway operators in France and Luxembourg. Furthermore, the document calls for accelerated investment in the development of cross-border infrastructure. Supporters of the petition emphasise that this route has become of strategic importance to Luxembourg’s economy, as tens of thousands of foreign professionals use it every day. At the same time, if the current situation persists and capacity remains insufficient, this could trigger a mass exodus of passengers, who would be forced to abandon trains in favour of private cars.
