Airfares from Luxembourg could rise significantly as early as 2025

The Parliament of Luxembourg has considered an appeal by Jeff Engelen concerning Luxembourg aviation. The fact is that from 1 January 2025 the EU requirement came into force, according to which airlines are obliged to use at least 2% of environmentally friendly aviation fuel (SAF). The problem is that, according to fuel suppliers, the price of SAF is 5-6 times higher than that of regular Jet A1 paraffin.

The Luxembourg government supports EU plans to decarbonise aviation, but acknowledges the complexity of implementation. "The aviation sector is among the so-called 'hard-to-modernise' industries and measures of this kind require a thorough analysis of their impact on the aviation ecosystem," the joint response from the Ministries of Transport, Environment and Economy said.
