Diesel prices rise in Luxembourg

Drivers of diesel cars will have to pay more: from Friday, 16 January, the price of diesel rose by 3.7 cents per litre to €1.412. The increase took effect immediately after midnight and was one of the most significant price movements in the fuel market in recent times.
Against this backdrop, the situation with petrol appears stable. The price of 95 octane petrol remained at €1.433 per litre, and 98 octane petrol at €1.539. Thus, the increase affects only diesel fuel, which traditionally reacts more strongly to changes in the tax burden and wholesale price dynamics.
This divergence in price dynamics highlights the structural differences between fuel types. Diesel in Europe remains more sensitive to fiscal and regulatory factors, while petrol is currently demonstrating price inertia. As a result, the gap between diesel and petrol is narrowing, which may affect both consumer behaviour and long-term preferences when choosing a car.
