From Monday, 1 September 2025, Luxembourg will launch the second maintenance and cleaning campaign for road tunnels this year. This is announced by the Administration des ponts et chaussées, the authority responsible for bridges and motorways. The aim of the work is not only prevention, but also the elimination of identified faults in order to maximise safety and reduce the risk of unplanned closures in the future.

The scale of the campaign is impressive: more than 25 tunnels and wildlife crossings across the country, including Grouft, Rëngelbourg, Saint-Esprit, Howald, Pétange-Église and Markusberg, will be serviced. In total, these are key infrastructure nodes through which tens of thousands of vehicles pass every day.

To minimise the impact on traffic, most of the work is carried out at night. This solution also makes it possible to synchronise maintenance with other road projects and avoid unnecessary strain on the transport system.

Maintenance includes both routine cleaning of walls and structures and a detailed check of the interaction of all security systems. Among the equipment to be checked and updated are ventilation systems, video surveillance, fire detectors, lighting, radio transmitters, emergency intercoms, automatic smoke detection systems and much more. In addition, specialists will maintain pumps, tanks, generators, transformers and roadway elements.

Particular attention is paid to systems that ensure stable operation of the tunnels in emergency situations: from carbon monoxide detectors to sound alerts and emergency lighting. Their proper functioning can be critical in the event of fire, smoke or a major accident in the tunnel.

The schedule and details of works for each site can be found on the www.cita.lu road traffic portal. Data on temporary closures and alternative routes are also published there.
