Luxembourg Airport is set to welcome a record 5.7 million passengers this year

In 2026, Luxembourg Airport is expecting record passenger numbers – around 5.7 million people, of whom 1.2 million will travel during the summer months. This figure is 13.5 per cent higher than the previous year’s figures, prompting the airport management to launch a series of infrastructure upgrades.

To cope with the seasonal surge in passenger numbers, the airport operator Luxairport has increased its staff numbers and upgraded the digital display boards in the terminals. According to João Fernandes, head of operations, the new displays enable travellers to find information about flights, check-in desks and boarding gates more quickly. At the same time, to improve the efficiency of security checks, a dedicated area has been set up where passengers can prepare their liquids in advance of screening. In addition, new electronic turnstiles have been installed before the security area, which speeds up the flow of queues.

Despite the ongoing incremental improvements, the physical expansion of Terminals A and B remains a key priority for Luxairport. Construction work is due to begin next year: the refurbishment of Terminal B is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028, and that of Terminal A four years later. The company’s Chief Executive, Alexander Flassak, emphasises that the project is essential to meet growing demand, which is partly driven by the expansion of the national carrier Luxair’s fleet. At present, the infrastructure is reaching the limits of its capacity during peak hours – early in the morning, before 10 am, and late in the evening.

Once construction work is complete, the apron’s capacity is expected to increase from the current 27 to 53 aircraft. The modernisation is being carried out as part of the airport’s long-term master plan, which runs until 2050. By that time, according to forecasts, annual passenger traffic could exceed 10 million. Meanwhile, changes have also been made to the supporting infrastructure: screens displaying information on free public transport and events across the country have been installed at the terminal exits, whilst new navigation signs have been introduced in the underground car park to help drivers find their way around.
