On Friday 16 May, construction work officially began on a new section of tram line in Luxembourg's Kirchberg district. The project, designated Kirchberg2A, will link the Grand Duchess Charlotte bridge with the European School, deepening the integration of public transport in this key business and educational quarter of the capital.

The launch ceremony was attended by Minister of Transport and Public Works Yuriko Backes, Luxembourg Mayor Lydie Polfer, City Council member Patrick Goldschmidt and members of the press. Although preparatory work started in February, the project officially entered its active phase in mid-May.

The new section of tram line will run along Boulevard Konrad Adenauer, connecting the Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg transport hub with the area where the European School is located. This site is of strategic importance as it provides a convenient transport link for students, parents and employees of the European institutions in the vicinity.

The line is scheduled to launch at the start of the 2027 school year - so the authority has just over two years to realise the ambitious plan.

The project envisages not only a technical extension of the route, but also aesthetic and environmental improvements. The central tram platform will be landscaped, and a double row of trees will be planted along the route. Thus, the new tram line will become not only a transport artery, but also an element of "green" urban design, emphasising Luxembourg's commitment to sustainable development.
