Europe's essential groceries prices are up

Significant price growth is recorded in France and Spain. For example, the ingredients to cook a traditional French stew coq au vin is now 14.7% more expensive. The cost of all ingredients for the dish has set a record, reaching 18.7 euros. Meanwhile, inflation in France is at 6%.

A similar picture is in Spain. Prices of rice for paella soared by 20% and olive oil by 30.5%. This is way higher than consumer inflation, which was just 8% in January. As a result, preparing a seafood dish costs 15.6% more.

Data compiled and cited by Bloomberg was based on a comparison of the cost of ingredients for traditional dishes in January 2022 and January 2023.
