Luxembourg evacuated a child from the Gaza Strip
On 15 January 2025, in coordination between the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Cooperation and Foreign Trade (MAE), the Ministry of the Interior (MAINT) and the Fire and Rescue Corps of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (CGDIS), Luxembourg organised the evacuation of a one-year-old child and three members of his family. The patient, who was suffering from a serious illness, was transported by Luxembourg Air Ambulance to Tirana, Albania.
The measure became necessary because of the destruction of the medical infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, where treatment of the patient became impossible.
The operation was part of the World Health Organisation's (WHO) efforts to evacuate children and other civilians from the Gaza Strip to third countries to receive life-saving treatment.
The mission was co-funded by the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) and the European Union through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. Resources from emergency.lu, a platform specialised in medical evacuation (MEDEVAC), were used for the evacuation.
