On Monday, the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs updated its recommendations for travellers amid the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East. The ministry points to the unstable domestic political situation in Iran and the growing tensions between Iran, Israel and the United States. According to the ministry's assessment, the risk of military escalation remains high and could materialise "at any moment".
An official travel warning is currently in effect for Iran and the Gaza Strip. Travel to Syria, as well as to the border areas of Israel with Syria, Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, is strongly discouraged. In addition, the Luxembourg authorities advise against non-essential travel to Israel, Palestine (West Bank), Lebanon and Iraq.
There are no formal warnings for other countries in the region, including the Gulf states. However, the Foreign Ministry emphasises that even there, the situation could deteriorate sharply due to the confrontation between the US, Israel and Iran. Possible consequences include disruptions to air traffic, sudden airspace closures, flight cancellations and delays, regardless of the situation in a particular country. The risk of negative incidents near American military facilities in the region is noted separately.
Luxembourg citizens already in the Middle East are advised to exercise increased caution, monitor developments regularly, strictly follow the instructions of local authorities and avoid large gatherings. The Ministry also reminds citizens of the need to register their stay abroad on the LamA – Lëtzebuerger am Ausland platform in order to facilitate possible consular assistance.
