The Dutch government has formally requested from the European Union the right to an exception to the general asylum rules. The Minister for asylum and migration, Marjolein Faber, stated that this was necessary for the country to better control its borders and migration flows.

However, many experts believe that the request is unlikely to succeed. Existing rules require the agreement of all member states to make changes, and EU migration policy is based on the principles of solidarity and collective responsibility. Most EU countries support common asylum rules, and the Dutch request raises concerns about setting a precedent that could destabilize the single migration regime.

The European Commission has already expressed skepticism about the proposed changes, but the Dutch government plans to submit a new request. This situation underscores the growing tensions among EU member states over migration management, especially in light of the continuing influx of refugees and migrants into Europe.
