Will there be a new separate bus lane on A31?

To the north of Thionville, the A31bis project considers the possible conversion of paved roadside into a bus lane.

“The A31 motorway is almost always working at gull capacity,” the prefecture of Moselle warns. Creating a lane for buses would solve the problem of transport accessibility: make traffic smoother during rush hour, reduce travel time and support the development of public transport using cross-border buses.

However, a special bus lane can be used only if there are traffic jams. “Only in this case, we could allow buses to move along the roadside with a maximum speed of 70 km/h,” Hervé Vanlaer, director of Dreal Grand Est said to RTL 5 minutes.

In terms of traffic between Thionville and Luxembourg, it sometimes exceeds 100 000 vehicles per day on certain road sections. That is, it will be necessary to look for a solution for an ever-increasing traffic intensity anyway. The option with a special lane for buses is still being discussed.
