Luxembourg steadily reduces gas consumption - EU targets achieved ahead of schedule

In March 2025, Luxembourg once again performed strongly in reducing its natural gas consumption: minus 25.6 per cent compared to the 2017-2022 average. This performance was one of the best in the EU and well above the threshold set by the EU Council under the Energy Sustainability Programme.
The programme to reduce gas consumption was launched against the backdrop of an energy crisis caused by geopolitical factors and supply cuts. The EU Council recommendation of 25 March 2024 asked participants to reduce their aggregate natural gas consumption by at least 15% between April 2024 and March 2025, compared to the 2017-2022 average.
Luxembourg surpassed this benchmark, achieving a 21.2 per cent reduction over the reporting year. This is the third period of realisation of such targets since the beginning of the crisis, and the cumulative results place the country consistently among the leaders in energy savings.
Although the EU Council has decided not to extend the initiative beyond March 2025, in Luxembourg energy savings are increasingly seen not as a temporary measure but as part of a long-term strategy for sustainable development and energy independence.
The Ministry of Economy in cooperation with Klima-Agence launched a specialised platform www.energieauer.lu, where current data on energy trends are published in open access. And a resource www.leneda.lu is available for citizens to track individual gas and electricity consumption.
