The Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reported that 158 citizens of the Grand Duchy currently reside permanently in Mexico. The unrest broke out after reports of the death of Nemesio Oseguera, known as El Mencho. The authorities have not yet specified whether any Luxembourg nationals are in the areas affected by the violence.

According to AFP, the death of the alleged leader of the Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) cartel, one of the most influential criminal organisations in the world, has provoked a widespread reaction. Alleged cartel members blocked roads, set cars on fire, attacked petrol stations, banks and shops, and clashed with security forces in at least 20 states across the country. Dozens of deaths have been reported.

In Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state, considered a stronghold of CJNG, the streets were half-empty at the beginning of the week, with many schools and shops remaining closed. Despite President Claudia Sheinbaum's announcement that roadblocks had been removed, AFP journalists reported seeing barricades near Guadalajara and in the area where the operation against the cartel leader was taking place. This indicates continued instability, despite official assurances.

Under these circumstances, the Luxembourg authorities advise their citizens to contact the consular service or the Luxembourg Embassy in Washington, which is also responsible for Mexico, in case of an emergency. Tourists are strongly advised to register on the LamA (Lëtzebuerger am Ausland) platform, which is designed to keep track of citizens abroad.
