Late on Friday night, one of Luxembourg's most densely populated neighbourhoods, Bonnevoie, was the scene of an incident in which an emotional conflict escalated into a potentially deadly offence. At 22:00, police received a report of a hit-and-run collision with a pedestrian and the driver's subsequent flight. It transpired that shortly before, the victim had had a verbal altercation with another man outside a bar on Rue de Bonnevoie in Luxembourg City.

The scene resembled footage from a crime thriller: as the victim walked away from the scene of the conflict, the driver got behind the wheel and is believed to have deliberately hit his opponent. Despite the force of the impact, the victim escaped relatively unhurt with minor injuries and was taken to hospital for observation.

The police officers were on the trail of the car a few hours later. On the order of the prosecutor, the driver was detained and brought before an investigating judge. The car involved in the hit-and-run was seized. The investigation of the case is continuing, and in the near future it may be reclassified from a road traffic accident to an intentional offence.

Accidents at the beginning of the week: north of the country

The first collision occurred on the regional motorway RN18, between Lenzweiler and Clervaux, at around 19:24. Two vehicles collided and at least one person was injured. The injured person was treated by paramedics from Clervaux and firefighters from Wiltz.

The second accident happened a few hours later, around 1:42 a.m. Tuesday, on the CR103 road between the towns of Olm and Kehlen. One person was also injured there, requiring emergency medical attention. Emergency services from Mamer, Kehlen, Steinfort and Luxembourg arrived on the scene.

While each of these incidents individually could be put down to chance or emotion, their totality speaks to a wider problem - the escalation of violence and the lack of control of aggressive behaviour in public places and on the roads.

The first story is particularly disturbing: it shows how a conflict on the street can escalate into a crime using a car as a weapon. This is not just a road traffic accident, but an attempt at violence against a background of personal animosity. Such cases are particularly alarming because they blur the line between a traffic offence and an attempt on life.
