A scandal is unfolding in Luxembourg over the sale of dangerous psychoactive substances via a network of vending machines. Products labelled as THCA-cannabis (a non-psychoactive precursor to THC) turned out to be ordinary CBD (cannabidiol) buds sprayed with the synthetic cannabinoid MDMB-PINACA. This laboratory compound mimics the effects of marijuana but has a devastating impact on the body and mind.

An investigation launched by RTL Today in collaboration with the drug testing service Pipapo (a project run by the NGO 4motion) revealed that the ingredients listed on the packaging were completely inaccurate. Instead of the promised THCA, which is strictly prohibited in Luxembourg on a par with conventional THC, consumers were receiving a mixture containing highly toxic additives. Pipapo experts warn that due to the uneven distribution of the synthetic coating on the buds, the risk of overdose increases significantly. Substances of this kind have already caused fatalities in Europe.

Luxembourg’s Ministry of Health and Ministry of the Economy have strongly condemned the situation. The departments emphasised that any product containing THC or its precursor THCA is classified as a narcotic and is prohibited from being sold freely. The presence of official tobacco excise stamps on containers does not make their contents legal if they contravene the law on narcotics.

Side effects of taking MDMB-PINACA include:

  • severe nausea and vomiting;
  • sudden drops in blood pressure and seizures;
  • panic attacks and acute psychotic episodes.

Representatives of the company responsible for operating the vending machines have announced the launch of an internal investigation and the temporary closure of the sales outlets. In an official statement, the management asserts that all products are sourced from trusted suppliers and are accompanied by test certificates. Nevertheless, the sales point where the test sample was purchased is currently closed, and the authorities are urging the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid questionable products from vending machines.
