On Thursday afternoon, the criminal chamber of the court handed down a verdict in a case that shocked Luxembourg's sporting and local community. Lisandro, the former coach of football club Jeunesse Esch, was found guilty of premeditated murder and sentenced to 18 years in prison, of which 12 years were suspended.
It refers to the tragic events that took place in January 2023 at the club's stadium. During a fight that broke out during a match, Lisandro stabbed a young man to death. The incident took place in front of players and spectators, which only increased the public outcry.
After serving his sentence, Lisandro will be required to undergo compulsory psychiatric observation. The court also ordered to pay 56,000 euros in compensation to the victim's family.
The court also considered an episode involving the father of one of the players, who was also involved in a scuffle. However, his actions were considered self-defence and he was not convicted. The judges concluded that his injuries were not intentional.
Both sides have 40 days to file an appeal.
