In Luxembourg and across Europe, Coca-Cola is recalling certain batches of its beverages. The reason is high levels of chlorate, which can reduce the blood's ability to carry oxygen and cause kidney problems with acute exposure.
The recall was initiated by Coca-Cola's European bottling plant in Belgium. The Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration confirmed that the risk exists even if products from contaminated batches are consumed once.
Auchan
- In Luxembourg, more than 2,500 packs are under recall.
- Coca-Cola representatives removed the products from the shops on their own.
Dallmayr (chain of vending machines)
- Locked problematic products in warehouses.
- Removed the drinks from the vending machines.
- Placed warning notices on retail outlets.
Cactus
- The products have been withdrawn from sale and stockpiled.
- Customers can return the drinks and receive a refund.
- The information on returns is available in several languages.
Munhowen (beverage distributor)
- Organised the return of products in accordance with Coca-Cola's instructions.
Despite the seriousness of the situation, the number of recalled products remains small on the scale of Coca-Cola sales. However, all major retailers and distributors responded quickly by blocking the affected products.
Customers can go to the shops and get a refund. Instructions on how to make a refund are posted at all points of sale.
This case emphasises the importance of quality control even for the biggest brands. In Luxembourg, retailers responded quickly, minimising the risks to consumers. If you have bought Coca-Cola recently, it is worth checking the batch or contacting the shop for clarification.
