Having sold a car in any EU country, Luxembourgers can request a VAT refund online

After selling a new car, you can now request a partial refund of the VAT in Luxembourg through the website Guichet.lu. A refund can be issued after a sale in any EU country.

To apply for a refund online, you do not need identification on MyGuichet and eID.

It is worth noting again that this applies only to new cars: for a car with total travel time of more than 100 hours, it will no longer be possible to issue a refund.

To get a refund, you will need an invoice with the buyer’s and seller’s data, the date of the order and sale, the number of hours and kilometers that the car has traveled. As well as a document on the car removal from registration in Luxembourg received from SNCA.

It is necessary to declare a sale for VAT payment within 15 days from the date of sale and request a refund within the next 5 years from the year of sale. At the same time, the end date is not 5 years from the date of sale, but December 31 of the fifth year. For example, if you sell a car on March 5, 2022, you can request a refund until December 31, 2027.

First of all, the new simplification is aimed at those Luxembourgers who are engaged in overtaking cars in Europe. Obviously, now they don’t have to deal with paperwork between trips to other countries. It is enough to apply online to receive partial compensation from the state.
