Spring under the wheels: the toad migration has started in Luxembourg

With the first warm nights, the annual spring toad migration begins throughout Luxembourg. Under the influence of wet weather and warm temperatures, the amphibians move en masse from the forests to the water bodies to breed. This movement takes place during the dark hours of the day, mainly from late evening until dawn.

According to the Agency for Nature and Forests (ANF) and the organisation natur&ëmwelt, migration peaks in March. However, this natural process faces a harsh reality: road traffic is becoming a deadly threat. Studies show that as few as 10 cars per hour can kill up to 30 per cent of toads crossing a motorway. They are particularly vulnerable near breeding grounds, where males often travel on top of females, making pairs even slower and more defenceless.

To minimise losses, the authorities plan to identify key migration routes and implement protective infrastructure:

  • temporary roadblocks,
  • amphibian subways,
  • and in some cases, nighttime road closures.

In addition, the organisation natur&ëmwelt encourages drivers to reduce speed in areas with amphibian markings and to report toad crossings, preferably with photos. This data will help map migration routes and direct efforts to where the risk is greatest.
