On 10 February 2025, Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel, visited the UK and held talks with the British Foreign Secretary, David Lammy. The meeting took place in London and was an opportunity to discuss the state and prospects of bilateral co-operation, as well as to exchange views on topical international issues.

Luxembourg and the UK have traditionally enjoyed strong diplomatic ties, as enshrined in a joint declaration on bilateral co-operation signed in May 2023. This document covers a wide range of issues, from politics and defence to environment and mobility. During the talks, the parties confirmed their intention to develop co-operation in these areas, with a particular focus on sustainable finance.

Bettel and Lammy discussed the worsening situation in the Middle East and the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Although no concrete steps in this direction were announced, the very fact of the discussion shows the growing concern of European countries about instability in these regions.

Separately, the two sides discussed the "reset" of relations between the UK and the European Union. Bettel welcomed progress on the implementation of London's withdrawal agreements, including the Windsor Framework and the Trade and Co-operation Agreement. This is an important signal that Brussels and London are ready to engage constructively despite the differences that have emerged since Brexit.

Relations with the US were another important topic. The ministers discussed possible new tariffs that could affect European economies. Bettel emphasised the importance of transatlantic co-operation and said that Europe and the US could achieve more if they acted together, including within NATO.

One area of enhanced co-operation between the UK and Luxembourg has been in the financial sector, especially sustainable finance. With the global realignment of markets and the drive towards green investment, Luxembourg, as one of Europe's leading financial centres, sees opportunities to deepen its partnership with London, especially after Brexit.

Xavier Bettel's visit to London demonstrated Luxembourg's commitment to maintaining close ties with the UK and actively engaging in discussions on world issues. Whether it is Ukraine, the Middle East or financial issues, Luxembourg continues to play its role in European and international diplomacy, highlighting the need for dialogue and cooperation.
