Floods in Luxembourg: critical water levels are expected on the Alzette and Sur rivers
Recent heavy rains and the snowmelt that has started to melt have led to a sharp rise in the levels of the Alzette and Sur rivers. Following a meeting of the weather risk assessment cell (CERI), an orange warning was issued for several communities along the Alzette River: Hesperange, Pfaffenthal, Mersch and Ettelbrück.
Water levels will continue to rise at least into the evening and possibly overnight for the Sur River. According to weather stations, the water level on the Alzette may exceed the red level threshold, signalling extreme danger. Its tributaries such as the Attert and the Eisch are also at risk of rising to orange levels. On the River Suhr, the orange level is expected to be exceeded at the station in Diekirch, and the level may also rise today at the station in Bollendorf.
Authorities warn of a difficult situation: overnight readings can be unstable, making accurate forecasts difficult. Critical areas along major rivers remain particularly dangerous. In particular, the warnings concern the risk of road closures and possible collapses of coastlines.
National services ask citizens to be attentive and follow updates on official websites. Residents are advised to avoid travelling through flooded areas and to observe road closures. Detailed information is available at www.inondations.lu and www.meteolux.lu, as well as on radio and television.
