Illegals from Luxembourg storm Germany
Since September 2024, Germany has resumed border controls, resulting in 1,159 cases of illegal border crossings in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. Key data:
- 370 people crossed the border from Luxembourg, 726 from France and 63 from Belgium.
- 203 people were returned to Luxembourg.
The controls will last at least six months, according to the decision of German Interior Minister Nancy Feather. The main aim is to fight illegal migration. However:
- Controls have a negative impact on daily commuters (commuters) working in Luxembourg.
- Transport delays, especially on the A64, are causing congestion and inconvenience for thousands of people.
Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden said that such measures violate the principles of the Schengen zone. He emphasised that the controls weaken the economy and do not solve the migration problem. A little earlier, the checks were called illegal.
