In 2025, Luxembourg will have the second highest divorce rate in the world, behind Portugal. In this small and prosperous country, 66% of all marriages end in divorce - a statistic that says more about the transformation of society than about a lack of love or affection.

Portugal ranks first with a record 71%, followed by Spain (57%) and France (about 54%), where the picture is distorted by the possibility of registering a divorce with a notary, bypassing the court. Belgium, Finland and Cuba are also in the world's top ten.

Importantly, however, the study is not based on a "crude ratio" - the number of divorces per 1,000 inhabitants, where Russia or the United States, for example, lead the way - but on the ratio of divorces to marriages in the same year, which is considered a more accurate indicator of current trends in family life.

The reasons lie far beyond the personal. Luxembourg is one of the most international countries in Europe: more than 47% of the population is foreign, and employment contracts often involve travelling across borders. This means that families live in an environment of high mobility, linguistic and cultural diversity and unstable social ties.

In addition, recent changes in legislation have made the divorce process easier and more accessible. All of this creates an opportunity for people to decide to separate more often, not necessarily because of conflict, but as a result of a reassessment of their life choices.
