On 27 June 2024, the fourth homeless census took place in Luxembourg and Esch-sur-Alzette. It covered people without permanent housing and collected data on their situation.
The Luxembourg capital recorded 210 homeless people, an increase on last year (193 in 2023). Among them, 81% are men, 18% are women, and 1% are of undetermined sex. The largest age group is 41-50 years old. About 70.5 per cent of homeless people are EU citizens, including 23.9 per cent Luxembourgers.
There are 28 people in Esch-sur-Alzette without permanent housing. Among them, 96% are men and 4% are women. The most common age categories are 31-40 and 41-50 years old. Approximately 81.8% of the homeless are EU citizens and 13.6% are Luxembourg nationals.
In both cities, the majority of homeless people have lived in Luxembourg for more than 5 years and the average age is 43 years.
The census was conducted in 24 neighbourhoods of the capital and 18 neighbourhoods of Esch-sur-Alzette. The survey included 26 questions to better understand the problems of homeless people. The data will help to develop support and social adaptation measures for people in difficult circumstances.
