According to official data, Luxembourg's natural gas consumption fell by 16.3 per cent in January 2025 compared to the average level for the period 2017-2022. This means that the country not only meets, but also exceeds the EU target, which requires a minimum consumption reduction of 15 per cent.
Following the energy crisis in Europe caused by the reduction of gas supplies, EU countries have made commitments to reduce gas consumption. In March 2023, EU energy ministers renewed these measures, committing states to maintain a consumption reduction of at least 15% relative to the 1 April 2017-31 March 2022 average until 31 March 2025.
Luxembourg achieved these figures thanks to comprehensive measures, including energy efficiency improvements, incentives to switch to renewable energy sources, and a conscious reduction in gas consumption in both industry and the private sector.
