Since 18 March, Luxembourg has launched the traditional spring campaign for the maintenance and cleaning of road tunnels, which is carried out twice a year by the National Directorate of Roads (Administration des Ponts et Chaussées). The first on the list is the Pénétrante Sud tunnel on the B3 motorway.
The programme includes preventive and corrective maintenance of key safety systems, as well as washing maintenance of tunnel walls. According to the agency, the main objective is to make sure that all equipment functions smoothly and coherently.
The campaign will test many systems including: ventilation, smoke and fire detectors and sensors, lighting and navigation systems, CCTV cameras, emergency telephones, fire cabinets, electrical transformers, pumps, water collection tanks and automatic security systems.
In order not to interfere with traffic, all works are mainly carried out at night and will be completed by the end of May. The Howald and Cents tunnels are the last in the queue and will be completed on 29-30 May.
The second similar campaign, the autumn campaign, will run from early September to early November.
