According to Statec, inflation in December 2024 remained low at 0.1 per cent year-on-year and 1 per cent year-on-year in November. The main jump was due to seasonal increases in travel and fuel prices, while some food and beverages became cheaper.

With the start of school holidays and the festive season, airfares rose by 25.6% for the month and 4.5% compared to December 2023. The cost of package tours also increased by 15.1 per cent for the month.

Prices for petroleum products, after four months of decline, began to grow again - +1% for the month. Thus, diesel prices rose by 1.3%, petrol - by 0.5%. However, in annual terms, fuel prices fell by 8.1%.

In December, there was a 0.2% decrease in food prices. The most notable decreases were:

  • fresh fruit - -3.1%,
  • pizzas and quiche - -2.5%,
  • fresh vegetables - -2%.

However, some categories went up in price: fresh fish - +5.2%, tea - +2.6%, cheese - +0.7%.

Alcoholic beverage prices fell by 2.2%, thanks to festive discounts: spirits fell by -3.7%, wines by -2.6% and fortified wines by -4.6%.

Among the positive changes, it is worth noting a 5.9 per cent month-on-month drop in the cost of nursery and care home services. The price of electricity also fell sharply by 13.6 per cent.

Thus, despite the seasonal rise in the price of travel and fuel, overall inflation growth remains moderate, which helps the population to cope with economic challenges against the backdrop of holidays and winter spending.
