In a recent interview, Martine Hansen emphasised the importance of cooperation with the agricultural community. The Agricultural Table and the Wine Table discuss and implement measures to support farmers. For example, new agricultural legislation has been adapted to increase the availability of subsidies.

To stimulate new ideas, an Agri-Innovatioun platform has been created where farmers can receive support for innovation. Programmes to reduce ammonia emissions have also been introduced.

At the European level, Luxembourg is in favour of reducing the administrative burden on farmers. The number of mandatory inspections has been reduced from 5% to 1%. However, the quality of products such as milk and wine is still scrutinised:

  • Milk: monitoring allows the detection of abnormalities such as, for example, antibiotic residues, which helps farmers to maintain a high standard.
  • Wine: analysed from the growing of the grapes to the finished product. The AOP label guarantees compliance with quality standards.

Research into sustainable viticulture, including the Viti-Forst project, aims to reduce the use of chemicals and improve resilience to climate change.

The Minister noted the need to popularise agricultural professions. Open days on farms and support for young farmers through subsidies and awards stimulate interest in this field. In addition, the government actively supports local, regional and seasonal products. The Supply for future programme provides schools with organic and local products.

The ministry also promotes high standards of keeping domestic and farm animals. An electronic service for reporting cases of inhumane treatment of animals has been introduced, and vaccination and antibiotic use reduction campaigns are being implemented.
