The McDonald’s fast-food chain has officially announced that it is removing the McRib burger from its menu. According to a company press release published on Tuesday, the sandwich will be permanently removed from the menus of restaurants in Luxembourg and Germany on 27 October. In the official statement, the burger was described as a ‘true icon’, and the strong reaction from customers to the news of the menu changes came as a surprise to the company’s press office. Unlike in many other countries, where the McRib had long since been removed from the standard menu, in Luxembourg it had maintained its place for many years thanks to consistently high demand from customers.

The history of this product is closely linked to the Grand Duchy. The McRib burger was developed in 1981 by the Luxembourgish chef René Arend, a native of the commune of Wiltz (Wiltz), who emigrated to the United States of America in 1956. It is worth noting that two years earlier, in 1979, the same chef had created another of the corporation’s products that gained global fame in the 1980s: Chicken McNuggets.

Nevertheless, McDonald’s management plans to offer customers a direct alternative. The classic sandwich will be replaced by an updated version called the McRib Sweet Heat. The main difference in the new product will be the replacement of the traditional barbecue sauce with a sweet chilli sauce. At present, the company has not disclosed the exact date the new burger will be available in restaurants, nor has it revealed whether it will remain on the permanent menu or be sold for a limited time only.
