Luxembourg eliminated 16.7 million euros
The Ministry of Health reported the disposal of 755,240 doses of covid-19 vaccine. The doses had been stored for too long and could no longer be used for their proper purpose. The value of a batch of this size is estimated at approximately 16.7 million euros.
The reason for the destruction of such a colossal amount is that Luxembourg, like another EU country, was obliged to purchase drugs in proportion to the population. However, not everyone was vaccinated and received a booster dose. Some vaccines were also stored for emergencies.
The destroyed batch included 591,860 doses of Moderna's vaccine, 61,550 from Novavax, 52,410 from Pfizer, 31,520 from Janssen and 17,900 from AstraZeneca.
An additional 350,146 doses are projected to expire by the end of the year. It is possible that some of these will be used in time, as vaccination recommendations are still in effect. Doctors recommend that people over the age of 60 and those at risk be vaccinated.
