The Luxembourg Technical Agricultural Lycée in Gilsdorf (Lycée Technique Agricole in Gilsdorf) hosted the first "Luxembourg Vegetable Day" event, which brought together around 130 participants - farmers and vegetable specialists.

On the agenda:

  • Production of vegetables in open ground and greenhouses;
  • Pest and disease control;
  • Vegetable processing and environmental law issues;
  • Food safety in the packaging of fruit and vegetables.

The event was attended by national and international experts, including representatives from Switzerland and Germany, as well as specialists from the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology, the Institute of Biological Agriculture and Agroecology (IBLA) and other organisations.

Minister of Agriculture, Food and Wine Martine Hansen presented measures to support vegetable production, including:

  • Increased advisory support: fruit and vegetable farmers can now receive specialised advice, including support for greenhouse production.
  • Greenhouse subsidies: a new bill on state subsidies for the construction of large greenhouses has been introduced.

Hansen noted that greenhouse vegetable production is still underdeveloped in Luxembourg, but has significant potential to increase the national level of self-sufficiency in fruit and vegetables.

The success of the first Vegetable Production Day inspired the organisers to hold the event annually. The event is organised by the Action Group "Horticultural Production" set up by the Ministry of Agriculture. The group brings together public and private organisations to promote sustainable vegetable production in Luxembourg.
