Against the backdrop of ongoing works to widen the A3 motorway, Luxembourg's Ministry of Mobility has announced another major operation affecting one of the country's key transport arteries. From midnight Thursday 8 May until Monday morning 12 May 2025, traffic between the Croix de Gasperich and Croix de Bettembourg junctions will be closed in both directions. The closures will also affect access junctions and access to the country's largest petrol station, Aire de Berchem.

There will be a full closure from 00:00 Thursday, 8 May to 05:00 Monday, 12 May:

  • traffic on the A3 towards Luxembourg (south to north);
  • exits from the A13 to the A3 towards Luxembourg;
  • exit to the A3 from the N31 via the Livange junction.

And from 02:00 on Friday, 9 May:

  • closure of traffic on the A3 towards Metz (north-south);
  • Exits from A1 and A6 via Croix de Gasperich to A3 towards Metz;
  • and exit again via the N31 onto the A3 - now southbound.

Detours:

  • Traffic from the south (Croix de Bettembourg) towards Luxembourg is directed via the A13 towards Esch, then via the A4 and A6 with a return to the A3 in the north.
  • Those travelling from the northern part (Croix de Gasperich) towards Metz will have to detour via the A6 (towards Belgium), then the A4 and A13 back to the southern section of the A3.
  • Traffic from the N31 will be diverted via Burange and the same A13-A4-A6 link, depending on the direction.

From 9.30pm on 8 May until the morning of 12 May, access to the popular Aire de Berchem leisure area and petrol station, which serves thousands of vehicles every day, will be closed.

The authorities warn: the first traffic jams will begin as early as Thursday evening, as the preparatory work will start several hours before the actual closure. Drivers are advised to plan their journeys in advance and avoid these sections if possible.
